Industrial system solutions and field services

What We Do

About Us:

Tate offers comprehensive industrial system solutions and field services, including a dedicated preplanning process that identifies optimal construction processes, seeks opportunities to modularize critical mechanical equipment and meets or beats project and shutdown schedules.

We were founded in 1924 by William Tate to service the Baltimore marine industry. We’ve been continually based in Baltimore and family-owned to this day, evolving with the needs of the market to expand our service to the entire Mid-Atlantic region. In January of 2020, we acquired Site Support Services (SSS) to further broaden our service and equipment offerings and provide our valued customers with complete floor-to-basement mechanical services and solutions.

Where It All Started

In 1920, William J. Tate embarked on a journey from Belfast, Ireland, to Baltimore, where he laid the cornerstone for a legacy that would endure a century. In 1924, he established Tate Engineering & Supply Co., focusing on specialized marine boiler replacement parts, while welcoming the birth of his son, Bob Tate, into the world. Tragedy struck in 1948 with William’s unexpected passing, prompting Bob to step into leadership and incorporate Tate Engineering, Inc.

By 1968, the company had burgeoned, expanding beyond marine affairs into industrial products and services, spawning sister companies like Tate TEMCO, Tate Architectural Products, and Tate Technical Services. The 1980’s marked a decade of significant growth, with Tate Industries flourishing under Bob’s guidance, while strategic divestitures like Tate Andale and Tate Access Floors found new homes within the third generation of the Tate Family under Bill Tate and Dan Baker. Transition beckoned again in 2001 when Tate Engineering Services was sold to the Baker Family, setting the stage for Alec Baker to assume leadership in 2018.

Where We Are:

In 2018 the decision was made to change our focus from being predominantly an equipment sales company to focusing almost entirely on service, repair and installation. The centenary decade of Tate Engineering saw the acquisition of Site Support Services in January of 2020, heralding the advent of a significant HVAC service division. As 2024 unfolds, Tate Engineering proudly celebrates a century of innovation, resilience, and commitment to excellence.
